Years later, his mother married another Canadian soldier and moved to Germany, leaving Eric with his grandparents in Surrey. The similarity in surnames gave rise to the erroneous belief that Clapton's real surname is Clapp (Reginald Cecil Clapton was the name of Rose's first husband, Eric Clapton's maternal grandfather). Clapton grew up believing that his grandmother, Rose, and her second husband, Jack Clapp, Patricia's stepfather, were his parents, and that his mother was actually his older sister. Fryer was drafted to war before Clapton's birth and then returned to Canada. Ĭlapton was born on 30 March 1945 in Ripley, Surrey, England, to 16-year-old Patricia Molly Clapton (1929–1999) and Edward Walter Fryer (1920–1985), a 25-year-old soldier from Montreal, Quebec. In 1998, Clapton, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, founded the Crossroads Centre on Antigua, a medical facility for those recovering from substance abuse. In his solo career, he has sold more than 280 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist, and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and of Cream. He has received four Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004, he was awarded a CBE for services to music. His most recent studio album is Happy Xmas (2018).Ĭlapton has received 18 Grammy Awards as well as the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Since 1999, he has recorded a number of traditional blues and blues rock albums and hosted the periodic Crossroads Guitar Festival. In 1998, he released the Grammy award-winning " My Father's Eyes". In 1996 he had another top-40 hit with the R&B crossover " Change the World". Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song " Tears in Heaven", which appeared on his Unplugged album. Like Blind Faith, the band only lasted one album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, which includes " Layla", one of Clapton's signature songs.Ĭlapton continued to record a number of successful solo albums and songs over the next several decades, including a 1974 cover of Bob Marley's " I Shot the Sheriff" (which helped reggae reach a mass market), the country-infused Slowhand album (1977) and the pop rock of 1986's August. Clapton then toured with Delaney & Bonnie and recorded his first solo album in 1970, before forming Derek and the Dominos with Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon. Clapton then formed the blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech, recording one album and performing on one tour before they broke up. After four successful albums, Cream broke up in November 1968. After leaving Mayall, he formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". Īfter playing in a number of different local bands, Clapton joined the Yardbirds from 1963 to 1965, and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers from 1965 to 1966. He was also named number five in Time magazine's list of "The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players" in 2009. In 2023, Rolling Stone named Clapton the 35th best guitarist of all time. He ranked second in Rolling Stone 's list of the " 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibson 's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time". He is regarded as one of the most successful and influential guitarists in rock music. Eric Patrick Clapton CBE (born 30 March 1945) is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter.

To have a crucial conversation with dialogue, We first need to know WHY we are having it. If we want to be successful we need to TALK about our innovation plan and our intentions for implementing the plan using the 6 Sources of Influence and 4DX, remembering the “why” throughout the conversation. We cannot be silent or passive, as this is lonely, ineffective, and wasteful. Note, we will record each of the sessions in case everyone will not be able to attend every week.Having these conversations can be intimidating because we feel vulnerable, but in that vulnerability is where effective communication lies. Tom Cagley and Jon M Quigley will be your guides through the material, posing follow on questions that guide you through the exploration of the work. We are limiting the book club to 10 participants to facilitate ease of discussion of the text and to allow interaction. The materials will include definitions of keywords and a series of questions to ponder for each chapter as you read through the book. We are changing a one time fee of $3.13 which equates to 4.95 (ish) once Eventbrite factors in their fees to encourage people that sign up to show up.Įach session will be outlined in the supplemental material provided for the book club. We are only opening 10 seats for each group of sessions. We are starting our dialog on Friday, April 10th and the event will run over 7 sessions (we will avoid as many religious and national holidays as possible). The first book is Out Of The Crisis by Deming (don’t have a copy - ) The name is a nod to “Quality, Agile, and Lean Classic Books: Greatness in the Workplace” to the content. Week 2 – Chapter 1: What’s a crucial conversation? And who cares? – Week 1 – Logistics, Forewards, and Preface – The authors use the quote, “The pool of shared meaning is the birthplace of synergy“ as an anchor for the rest of the book.ĭoes the metaphor of a shared pool make sense? Have you seen scenarios where information is withheld during a decision-making process? What was the outcome? Just as problematic as silence, when a person feels frozen out of a dialog they can either try to force information into the pool or withdraw. Silence is just another form of withholding of information that weakens the decision-making process. The need to establish a shared understanding goes back to the opening quote from Dr. The authors point out that how we make the situation safe for pooling information and building a shared understanding is at the heart of the rest of the book. At the beginning of any dialog, there is a need to share information and to establish participant’s opinions and biases. One of the goals of a dialog is to build a pool of shared knowledge that allows people to communicate more effectively. The definition in the book of dialogue is “the free flow of meaning between two or more people”. You might see this as common sense but in reality, it is HUGELY difficult.ĭialogue is the tool the authors use to avoid the fool’s choice. The most influential people find a way to be 100% honest and at the same time staying 100% respectful, therefore avoiding the fool’s choice. A fool’s choice is a mistaken belief that you have to speak up and turn powerful people against you versus suffering in silence and accepting bad decisions. The first major take away in the chapter is the identification of the fool’s choice. One crucial attribute was not staying silent. The first part of the chapter describes how the authors found super influential people within organizations and then identified the attributes that made them more influential than others. “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” that highlights the problem with staying silent. The chapter begins with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. This week we continue our re-read of Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High, Second Edition by Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, Switzler with Chapter 2, titled Mastering Crucial Conversations: The Power of Dialogue. If someone deletes a folder outside of Godot, renames it, moves it, etc. I personally think adding them to the project.godot or (as suggested) adding a. Question in regards to how folder colors are stored. If you're interested, I'll (hopefully) try to work on this at the-sink/custom-folder-colors after I've had some time to look around. I was also interested in working on this, although I'm personally still learning the ropes on Godot's source code. This way, folder icons can be distinguished by colorblind people. This would make it difficult to support both dark and light themes. Should this information be stored in project metadata (= not in version control) or in project.godot so it can be checked into version control? I'm leaning towards the latter, but I'm not 100% sure.Īlso, while customizing the colors to a few presets sounds good to me, I'm not sure if we should allow for customizing the icon entirely. This is already a feature in Unreal Engine (at least the color part) and is a very nice tool to help organize and define which folders are more/less important when navigating the filesystem, and I think it would be a great QOL feature for developers. It is a relatively simple feature that would require an unnecessarily complex means to add yourself (see above question). Is there a reason why this should be core and not an add-on in the asset library?: Not that I am aware of, short of completely replacing the FileSystem view with a custom one using a plugin. Let’s kick-start the list with some cool looking Saiyans. Goku and several other Saiyan, Dragon Ball Series I have looked at some examples of similarity. There is also another aspect to similarity called anomaly, this happens when a particular element can be emphasized when its dissimilar, breaking the pattern of similarity. This has been used in the past to create single illustrations, images or even a message created from the use of a series of separate elements. One of Gestalt’s principles is called similarity, there are many ways to which a piece of work can have this principle applied, whenever it shares visual characteristics such as shape, size, colour, texture, value or orientation this will make it appear as it all fits and belongs together. Gestalt’s theory is divided into six principles, these are: These theories attempt to describe how people tend to organize visual elements into groups or unified wholes when certain principles are applied. It refers to theories of visual perception developed by German psychologists in the 1920s. This is where order really comes into play not only are you creating a balanced flow, but you are also creating one that feels harmonious.Gestalt is a psychology term which means unified whole. You want to analyze your design regarding rows, order, the flow of elements, and making sure things feel right. Looking at it specifically for web design, the balance, and flow of the overall layout are the most central to this principle. In terms of a design context, that’s still very accurate! Symmetry is one design element that comes straight from nature – a perfect replication with perfect balance in shape and form. We all remember cutting out snowflakes or butterflies in elementary school to make something perfectly symmetrical. A perfectly balanced figure and ground will cause things to shift in a place, as you see in the works of M.C. This is the exact principle at play in many works of optical illusions. So, keep in mind you want to keep your background elements more subdued to maintain this relationship since your mind can play tricks on you when there’s equal emphasis on each. This is useful when you’re working with background images and PNGs to help put emphasis on the figure or foreground of what’s actually important. This is because it feels like the figure where the orange is acting as the ground. You’ll notice you’re drawn to the circular form over the orange square. Similarity comes from a few principles of design: weight, color, size, and shape. You can also use dissimilar elements to break away from the previous part of the flow to direct the user’s focus. It should be used in sections with similar elements in one row to make it feel like a group. Items that look similar tend to blend together as one, while dissimilar items stand out from the group. We will dig into each principle, explain its importance, and why you should always consider them when designing! Similarity When it comes to web design, you can use these principles together to make things immediately more impactful without thinking too hard about why. Gestalt is German for “unified whole.” This important field of study sheds light on how we group things subconsciously. This theory comprises 6 principles based on how your brain secretly works to associate objects as a whole, then breaks them down into individuals. We want to revisit one of the most important core sets of design principles, Gestalt Theory. If you attended design school or were interested in psychology, you may have heard of Gestalt principles. |
